Word Processing Tools for Writers

If you need more than paper, pencil, or pen to write your next book or article, then keep reading.

Most of us know about Microsoft Word and Google Docs, but do you know about these other word processors?

LibreOffice

The free counterpart to Microsoft Word. LibreOffice is the open source answer for people who want to try Microsoft without paying the price tag. Plus it’s compatible with all of the regular file types people are used to, such as .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, and .pptx files. There is a drawback for many users. It’s said to have a complex interface. If you’re a techie, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Draft

Is similar to Google Docs but with some perks. Draft keeps track of how many words you write per day, and it can also email you daily reminders about your daily word count goals if you want that added accountability.

Reedsy Book Editor

Reedsy is also a free online word processor. It formats your book as you write. You can see your drafts automatically turn into a professional-looking, ready-to-publish manuscript. It also has its own automatic spell-checker and a built-in goal reminder system, and you can instantly typeset your manuscript to EPUB and print-ready PDF files. A drawback to Reedsy is that it’s online-only, so if you’re writing offline, you will hit a roadblock with Reedsy.

Mellel

This word processor is for Apple Mac users and costs $50. There is a 30-day free trial, so you can try it before you buy. With your investment, you’re receiving more book-specific tools than other, perhaps more traditional, word processors — such as outlining and bibliography-making functions. Check out Mellel here.

We will share other word processing options in a future post. Let us know which one(s) you prefer and why!
